Star Trek - 2009 Movie

This is the 2009 Movies blog preview of the Star Trek 2009 movie, Star Trek XI. With the new 2009 release, the Star Trek franchise goes back to its roots. This release is not really a sequel, since it takes place before the original Star Trek TV series, with its original run in the 1960s.

The original TV series starred William Shatner as Captain Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock. They created these famous characters and carried them over into the Star Trek movies that eventually were released into theaters after the Star Trek TV show concluded its original run.

Although the original TV series had a low-budget appearance, the Star Trek 2009 movie definitely is high budget and likely to be a blockbuster. It is a prequel to the original TV series and movies. The early days of Captain James T. Kirk and Science Officer Mr. Spock are explored, from their first meeting at Starfleet Academy on Earth and their first mission on a starship together.

In the meantime, the famous starship Enterprise is under construction, as the official website cheekily reveals. The new 2009 film also shows the childhood years of Kirk and Spock.

Paramount signed J.J. Abrams to direct the 2009 release of Star Trek. Abrams is renowned for his role in producing the Alias and Lost TV shows. Taking a page out of Lost, the Star Trek movie of 2009 includes future glimpses, like time travel, where Leonard Nimoy makes an appearance reprising his role as the old Spock, like in a flash forward.

In the 2009 outing, actor Chris Pine plays Captain Kirk, while Zachary Quinto plays Mr. Spock. Quinto, famous for playing the villain Sylar in Heroes has a striking resemblance to his character, just needing the vulcan ears to fill out the role. A key question for Trekkies (Star Trek fans of course) will be whether Pine convincingly pulled off beefcake like Shatner. Eric Bana appears as the villain Nero. Rounding out the starship Enterprise crew are Anton Yelchin navigator Pavel Chekov, Zoe Saldana as communications officer Uhura, Simon Pegg playing Chief Engineer Scotty and Karl Urban as doctor Leonard "Bones" McCoy.
